An academic CV builder that expects more than one page

A CV is not a long resume. It is a complete scholarly record — publications, teaching, funding, service — and it grows for decades. The section library here covers the parts a resume builder normally has no idea exist.

CV or resume?

In the US and Canada, a resume is a one-to-two page targeted summary for industry roles, and a CV is an exhaustive academic record used for faculty positions, fellowships, grants and research posts. In the UK, Ireland, and much of Europe and Asia, "CV" is simply the everyday word for what Americans call a resume.

If you are applying to a faculty search or a fellowship, you want the long version and length is expected. If a UK job advert asks for your CV, send two pages.

Themes that suit a long document

Ledger puts section headings in a left gutter, which makes a fifteen-page document navigable at a glance. Executive and Gala carry the formality of academic correspondence. Compact is the one to reach for when a fellowship application caps you at a page count.

Export to DOCX when a department portal demands an editable file, and to PDF for everything else.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a CV and a resume?

In North America a resume is a one-to-two page targeted summary for industry roles, while a CV is a complete academic record covering publications, teaching, funding and service. In the UK, Europe and much of Asia, "CV" simply means resume.

How long should an academic CV be?

As long as your record. Early-career CVs run two to four pages; established academics routinely have twenty or more. Length is expected, not penalised.

Can I add a publications section?

Yes — Publications, Teaching, Research Experience, Conferences and Grants & Funding are all one-click additions from the section library, and can be reordered by dragging.

Does the CV builder support multiple pages?

Yes. The preview and the PDF and DOCX exports paginate automatically, keeping entries from breaking awkwardly across a page boundary.
